Capability 05
A document or app it makes for you.
Exact name Generated deliverable
Step 05 · Build & shareWhat it is.
Instead of answering in the chat, the tool makes a separate thing: a document, a set of slides, a page, a small app. It's the part you can keep, send and come back to, as distinct from the conversation that produced it.
What your tool calls it.
- Space: A home area in ChatGPT for your pages, slides, uploaded files and shared work. It has a personal space plus shared spaces for a topic or team.
- Pages: Documents stored in Space that you and ChatGPT edit together. You can share them so others can view, comment on or edit them.
- ChatGPT Slides: Presentation decks that ChatGPT builds and that you and teammates keep editing together, then present or export.
- Sites: Websites and small tools you build with ChatGPT, kept in Space.
Also at ChatGPT: Spreadsheets
- Artifacts: Documents, decks, designs and other outputs Claude makes during a conversation. They are saved to an Artifacts tab where you can edit, share or export them.
- Claude Docs: Formatted text documents you write with Claude and teammates at the same time. They are saved to your account and can be exported to Word, PDF, Markdown or Google Docs.
- Claude Slides: Presentation decks made with Claude that you can edit, present and export to PowerPoint, Google Slides or PDF.
- Claude Design: Claude's tool for visual work such as designs, prototypes and one-pagers. You can now use it in any conversation, edit directly on the canvas and bring in your own design system.
- Claude Dashboards: not described on a first-party page read, beyond being an artifact type
- Claude Motion: not described on a first-party page read, beyond being an artifact type (exports include MP4)
- Canvas: A panel beside the chat that shows a generated file or Google document, which you can edit and export as .txt, .md or to Drive.
- Copilot Pages: Turns a Copilot answer into a separate page that you and colleagues can edit and share.
Also at Microsoft Copilot: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Agents
- Create files and apps: A Perplexity mode that builds reports, dashboards, spreadsheets, presentations and web apps from a request. Perplexity calls what it makes "assets": they open in a side panel beside the chat, can be edited with follow-up prompts, keep a version history, and can be downloaded or shared.
- Build Mode: Grok builds a working version of an idea, such as a small app or game, live in the chat on the web or a phone.
- artifacts: Documents, images, code and single-page web tools that Muse creates and can edit. They are saved to the user's Library and shared only with the user's approval.
- Canvas: A side panel where the assistant puts documents, tables, code, charts or presentations. You can edit, export or share them there.
- Mini App Canvas: Builds a small interactive app or dashboard from a prompt and shows it in Canvas. You can edit it, download the code or share a public link.
Why it matters.
Our view: many people make these without knowing they have a name, and then can't find them again or don't know they can share them. Knowing the word tells you where to look.
Words that trip people up.
- Canvas. In Gemini and Mistral, Canvas is the panel where the output appears. ChatGPT had a Canvas too; it's gone, replaced by writing and code blocks in the chat. More on "canvas" →
- Pages. ChatGPT Pages and Copilot Pages are both shared documents you edit with the tool, from two different vendors.
- Artifact. At Claude, Artifacts is the product name. At Meta, Muse saves "Artifacts" to your account. Elsewhere it's just an ordinary word.
- Claude Design used to be a standalone product; it's now inside Artifacts, and the standalone version is closing.
- Build. At Grok, Build Mode makes apps; Grok Build is a separate coding tool.
Close to this, but not it.
Next to it.
One step up.
This is the top step.
Every step is a fine place to stop if it does the job.
What this step asks of you.
Someone owns it once others depend on it, keeps it current, and retires it when it's no longer right. Decide who can use it and what data it can reach before you share it. A person reviews anything it makes before it reaches a customer.
Where we teach it.
In our one-day class, Your first real result stops to name it the moment one appears on your screen. The longer class makes them on purpose: The document you rebuild every time, and Build the small thing yourself.
