Capability 02

A workspace that keeps your material.

Exact name Persistent context container

Step 02 · Context that sticks
01

What it is.

A named space where you put your files and standing instructions once. Every conversation you start inside it begins with them. Google describes its version as "a continuous chat experience that remembers your sources, instructions, and ongoing discussions".

02

What your tool calls it.

Your tool · ChatGPT Projects
  • Projects: A way to group related ChatGPT work. Each project can use your general memory or a memory kept only for that project.
Your tool · Claude Projects
  • Projects: not described on a first-party page read in this research. The release notes say only that projects carry over between chat and Cowork.
Your tool · Gemini Gemini Notebook notebooks notebooks in the Gemini app, synced with Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM)
  • Gemini Notebook: A separate research tool where you collect sources into notebooks and ask questions grounded in them. Notebooks can also be attached to Gemini chats and tasks.
  • notebooks: A project space in the Gemini app. It keeps chosen sources, custom instructions and the chats inside it, and reuses them in every chat in that notebook. It syncs with Gemini Notebook.
Your tool · Microsoft Copilot Copilot Notebooks Copilot Notebooks — paid licence (one page disagrees)
  • Copilot Notebooks: A workspace where you collect files and other organisation content so Copilot can work over them across repeated sessions. Pages can be added for editing together.
Your tool · Perplexity Projects Projects (formerly Spaces)
  • Projects: not described on a first-party page read. One page says Computer sessions can start from a Project, and each Project keeps its own saved model setting.
Your tool · Grok Projects Projects — named, never described
  • Projects: not described on a first-party page. The FAQ names it, and the Business docs say projects can be shared within an organisation.
Your tool · Meta AI and Muse None Nearest: Muse side chats.
Your tool · Mistral Vibe Projects
  • Projects: Folders that group chats and give them shared tone, instructions and uploaded files. Every chat inside can use these without re-uploading.

Most tools call it a project. Google and Microsoft call it a notebook.

03

Why it matters.

Our view: it's the difference between explaining your job to the tool every morning and explaining it once. And it can outlast you: a colleague can start from a copy of the same material instead of building their own. Whether a tool lets you share the workspace itself varies, and our research didn't establish it for every vendor.

04

Words that trip people up.

  • Notebook. In Gemini, "notebooks" live in the Gemini app and sync with Gemini Notebook, which used to be called NotebookLM. Copilot Notebooks is a different thing again, and isn't OneNote. More on "notebook" →
  • Projects and memory. In ChatGPT, a project can use your general memory or keep a memory of its own. See memory across conversations.
  • Grok names Projects but, on the pages we could find, never says what they do.
  • Copilot Notebooks and your licence. Microsoft's pages disagree about whether you need the paid licence.
05

Close to this, but not it.

Mistral Vibe Libraries Not a match: A stored document collection you attach to chats. It holds no instructions and does not group chats.
08

What this step asks of you.

Step 02 · Context that sticks

Each workspace has one named owner who keeps its documents current. There's a rule on what goes in.

Where we teach it.

Give it your context once is the module where you build a workspace from your own reference material, use it instead of re-explaining, and hand a copy to a colleague. It's in our one-day class.
