Words that collide.

Some words mean different things at different vendors. Some mean several things at the same vendor. These are the ones most likely to trip you up when you move between tools, or read about one tool and use another.

01

“agent”

ChatGPT: the retired "ChatGPT agent", and Business "workspace agents". Microsoft: what you build in Agent Builder (a custom version you build and share), and prebuilt ones like Researcher. Perplexity: "Comet Agent" in the browser. Grok: each Bot. Meta: Muse is a "personal AI agent"; Meta Business Agent is a customer-service bot. Mistral: Vibe calls itself "Mistral's unified agent", and legacy "Agents" are custom assistants being retired.

02

“app”

ChatGPT: a connection to another service, now inside plugins. Gemini: "Connected Apps" are connections; the "Gemini app" is the product. Microsoft: the "Microsoft Copilot app" is the hub. Mistral: "mini apps" are generated apps in Canvas.

03

“artifact”

Claude: the product name for generated documents and apps. Meta: Muse "Artifacts" are saved account-wide. Microsoft, Perplexity, Mistral: a generic word, not a product.

04

“bot”

Grok: "Grok Bot" is the product, "a Bot" is one agent, "Shared Bots" are the team version (formerly Team Bots).

05

“Build”

Grok: "Grok Build" is a coding tool, "Build Mode" an app builder.

06

“canvas”

Gemini and Mistral: "Canvas" is the output panel. ChatGPT: Canvas is gone, replaced by writing and code blocks.

07

“computer”

Perplexity: "Computer" is the agent; "Personal Computer" runs on your Mac or PC. Claude: "computer use" is Claude controlling your screen. Grok Bot, ChatGPT dots and Muse each run on a cloud computer of their own; Gemini's Task uses a remote computer for code. Muse for Mac also acts on the user's own Mac.

08

“Copilot”

Microsoft alone: "Copilot Chat" is both the free tier and the chat surface inside the paid product. "Microsoft 365 Copilot" survives as the licence name ("an add-on plan") after the product became "Microsoft Copilot"

09

“Cowork”

Claude: a mode now merged into chat. Microsoft: Copilot Cowork, its own licensed product.

10

“memory”

Everywhere, with different scope. Gemini Memory is personal accounts only. Claude and Perplexity Projects have their own memory. Grok has three: chat memory, Grok Bot memory per Bot, Grok Build memory. Mistral renamed Memories to Knowledge Base.

11

“notebook”

Gemini: "notebooks" in the Gemini app (a workspace that keeps your material), synced with Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM). Microsoft: Copilot Notebooks, a workspace, not OneNote.

12

“Pages”

ChatGPT Pages and Copilot Pages are both collaborative documents, from different vendors.

13

“plugin”

ChatGPT: an installable bundle that also replaces GPTs. Claude: a bundle of skills and connectors. Perplexity: the page and catalog holding connectors and skills. Grok: Grok Build plugins, and Grok Bot's tool connections.

14

“routine”

Claude: the old name for scheduled tasks, still in URLs and the CLI. Grok: Grok Bot "routines" are scheduled jobs, separate from Automations.

15

Gemini: "Schedules" for chats; tasks have schedules of their own ("Schedules in tasks are different from schedules in chats"). Grok: Automations run on "Schedules"

16

“Spark”

Google: the former name of Task. Meta: Muse Spark, the model family behind Meta AI and Muse.

17

Microsoft: Copilot Studio builds agents. Google: Workspace Studio builds automation "flows". Meta: AI Studio (character creation retired). Grok: Grok Studio (retired).

18

“task”

Gemini: "Task" is the autonomous agent (formerly Spark), separate from Schedules and from the Google Tasks app. Claude: a Cowork task is a delegated job, and "scheduled tasks" are timed jobs. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Meta (Muse), Mistral: "scheduled tasks" are timed jobs. Mistral: any request in Work is a "task"

19

“temporary / incognito / private”

One idea, private or temporary chat, has three words: temporary (ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft, Mistral), incognito (Claude, Perplexity, Meta) and private (Grok). Meta's "Private Processing" is the technology behind Incognito chat, not a mode.

20

“Vibe”

Mistral: first the name of a coding CLI, then the whole assistant (formerly Le Chat).

21

“Work / workspace”

If a word you know isn’t here, search for it. It may be a name only one vendor uses.
