What it is.

The place where you type and the tool answers. Every tool on this map has one. Some put a second mode beside it, for longer jobs the tool works through on its own: ChatGPT has a Work toggle, and Gemini a Task toggle. Mistral went the other way: in Vibe, Work is the main window, for quick questions and longer jobs alike, and the separate Chat is retiring.

Why it matters.

It's where everyone starts, and where most people stay. Our view: the useful thing to know is which mode you're in. The chat answers you. The mode beside it can go off and do things: see an agent that works through a job on its own.

Words that trip people up.

  • "Copilot Chat" is two things at Microsoft: the free tier, and the chat inside the paid product. And Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is now called Microsoft Copilot Chat. More on "Copilot" →
  • "Work" is a mode in ChatGPT and in Mistral Vibe, and a sign-in label at Microsoft. More on "Work" →
  • "Perplexity Ask" appears on other websites, but we couldn't find it on any of Perplexity's own pages. Perplexity's own pages talk about Search and Computer modes.
