Capability 04

Memory across conversations.

Exact name Cross-conversation memory

Step 02 · Context that sticks
01

What it is.

Details the tool saves about you in one conversation and uses in later ones, without you loading them. Several tools let you see what it has saved and delete it.

02

What your tool calls it.

Your tool · ChatGPT Memoryrolling out
  • Memory: ChatGPT's store of saved details about you, which it can draw on in later conversations. A project can switch to a memory kept only inside that project.
Your tool · Claude memory
  • memory: Claude keeps separate, categorised notes about you from your conversations and uses them later, in both chat and Cowork. You can edit or delete each one.
Your tool · Gemini Memory Memory — personal accounts only
  • Memory: Gemini learns from a user's past chats and uses that to personalise later answers. Users can ask whether past chats were used, and delete chats so Gemini stops using them.

Your tool · Microsoft Copilot Copilot Memory Copilot Memory — on by default
  • Copilot Memory: Copilot remembers details about you and your work from Copilot Chat and other signals, and uses them to tailor its answers. You can view, delete or switch off saved memories.
Your tool · Perplexity Brainpreview Memory Memory · Brain (Research Preview, Max)
  • Brain: A memory system for Computer that builds a picture of your projects, people and files, so later requests can build on earlier work.
  • Memory: Perplexity remembers details you share across separate conversations. It is always off in incognito mode.

Your tool · Grok Memory across chats
  • Memory across chats: Grok remembers your preferences and past conversations across chats on grok.com.

Your tool · Meta AI and Muse Memory (Meta AI)some regions memories (Muse)some regions memory (Meta AI) · memories (Muse)
  • Memory (Meta AI): Meta AI saves facts you share and reuses them in later chats, across apps linked in the same Accounts Center. You can view and delete them.
  • memories (Muse): Muse keeps memories about you across conversations, which you can customise.
Your tool · Mistral Vibe Knowledge Basepreview Memoriesretiring Knowledge Base (preview) · Memories (legacy, retiring)
  • Knowledge Base: The assistant saves facts about you and your work, both when asked and on its own, as browsable, editable pages. It recalls them in later chats when relevant.
  • Memories: Le Chat's earlier memory of long-term facts and preferences across chats. It is migrating into Knowledge Base.

03

Why it matters.

Memory changes what the tool knows about you without you doing anything. At some vendors it's on unless you turn it off:

  • Microsoft: "Saving memories is On by default in Microsoft Copilot".
  • Claude: on by default for Free, Pro and Max; off by default for Team and Enterprise.

And it isn't everywhere: Gemini's Memory isn't available on work or school accounts.

Our view: memory is the opposite of a workspace you load on purpose. Both work. It's worth knowing which one you're relying on.

04

Words that trip people up.

  • Memory has a different scope everywhere. Claude's and Perplexity's projects keep a memory of their own. Grok has three: one for chat, one per Bot, and one in Grok Build. More on "memory" →
  • Renamed. Mistral's Memories became Knowledge Base. Gemini's "past chats" became Memory.
  • Private chats usually leave memory alone. See private or temporary chat.

What this step asks of you.

Step 02 · Context that sticks

Each workspace has one named owner who keeps its documents current. There's a rule on what goes in.

Should memory be on at your company, and for whom? That's the kind of question an Enable — Checkup settles. It leaves you with a written AI policy and a starting point for deciding what's allowed.
